School districts seem to toss those random half-days of school at parents every now and again. Whether you work from the home or an office, those days can be difficult to schedule around.
How do you handle them and how much planning does it take?

I've worked from home for a few years now and on the days that I have Kaius (almost 6 year old) and I need to get stuff done - I take him to one of those indoor jungle gym places. They usually have wireless internet and if they don't then I have my own portable internet I can use. I have my laptop and I do stuff that doesn't require me to be on the phone because those places are a dull roar at best. I guess this works if you're mostly a quiet, do stuff on the computer type of work from home business owner or employee. The other thing I do is - we don't have all his toys out in the open all the time - if I need an hour or two of peace I just pull out something he hasn't played with in ages and he's good to go. Puzzles are great, so are crafts because weirdly enough he can spend an hour picking glue off his hands afterwards and it's the quietest he'll have ever been. Now I manage my mom's pizza shop and still do a few things 'from home (from the pizza shop when it's not busy)' so he has a place to really run around, people to interact with and orders to run back to the kitchen. Good Luck!

Thanks, Wendy! We do the toy rotation thing, too. But while Markus can often be good with self-play, Rafael likes to have the entire family involved quite often. But I love the idea of going to one of those jungle gym places - I'm mostly on the 'puter, too.

Well, I deal with it by homeschooling. Now, you may laugh, but honestly, on my district's schedule, there wouldn't be a week of the school year that one or the other of my kids wouldn't have a holiday, teacher conference, in-service, etc. I really couldn't see where I'd have time to work. It was one of the factors that started making sense for homeschooling. A little outside the box, I know. However, my decision is everyone's benefit... now my middle two kids and their amazing child-wrangling skills are in GREAT demand as sitters and mother's helpers for WAH moms in our area. ;) Might be a nice kid in your neighborhood, too.

@Brooke - That's great that it works for you. I know people have a lot of different reasons for homeschooling, and all are valid reasons. Awesome they get all the babysitting gigs.
