Recently we lost one of our family pets, a basset hound named Aries. I didn't want to tell my son that Aries had died and told my husband to tell our son she ran away. I quickly realized this was wrong and we told him the truth.
He handled it much better than I thought he would and he knew that she was no longer in any pain. That seemed to make it okay.
So we didn't have to talk to him about death, this time. But I would love some tips and suggestions on how to talk about death to kids, so if the subject does come up, I'll be better prepared.
