My son today is 7 years old.  He has been receiving an allowance for over a year now.  He does a few chores like doing his bed in the morning before coming down for breakfast.  

But we do it more for building his arithmetic skills and developing money management.  Having an allowance keeps him from asking us to buy him something whenever we go to a store.

Since the beginning of this year we have been giving him $5 per week.  But he only gets to spend $3 of it because $1 goes to savings and $1 goes to charity (which his parents match at the end of the year).

Also, we have set up the morning of the second Saturday of each month for him buy something with what he has been saving.  Thanks to the tooth fairy he's got a good amount right now.

Well, as I mentioned before we do 15 minute cleanups, we run around like mad and clean together. Besides that, and their rooms... If its something extra, like deep cleaning the bathroom, or helping me in my room. I will give them money.

Or if they need money for something they want, not a need... Ill find extra chores so they can earn it. My oldest does clean my dad's house 2x a month making $40 a month. So that is great, this almost pays for her cell phone bill.
