My son's Kindergarten teacher gave me this great idea on creating a school tradition that will make a great graduation gift. Go and buy the book I Knew You Could by Craig Dorfman. Do you remember The Little Blue Engine That Could - I think I can...I think I can? It's the same little blue engine. From "I think I can" to "I knew you could". The perfect book for a child as they make the transition from one phase of life to the next.
His teacher read the book to her class during Parents Night last week (and I cried, of course) and afterwards she told me how she bought two copies of the book for each of her sons. She said to fill out the front or back of the book with a message to your son or daughter. Stacie, my partner in crime here at iMommyTalk, also had a neat suggestion. She said to write a little message in the book at the end of each school year. So you would have thirteen notes that are specific to something in particular about each school year.
Whether you do one big message or thirteen smaller ones, is fine.
Also at the end of each school year read the book to them. I know when they get to high school they will seem to be embarrassed or annoyed with you for this. But I bet one day when they are parents themselves they will think fondly of this memory.
Then when they graduate high school give them I Knew You Could as a graduation gift. I mean, really... what a great school tradition and memory maker this will be.
